We can X-ray a horse, of course!
Our in-house diagnostic services include a portable digital equine radiography, allowing our veterinarians to provide this service not only at our hospital, but on-site for your horse if necessary.
Radiographs, or X-rays, use electromagnetic radiation directed towards the body to highlight objects within. They can detect abnormalities including skeletal fractures, soft tissue damage, foreign bodies and dental disease. Equine radiography is used for diagnostic purposes as well as for pre-purchase examinations to confirm that a horse is sound.
Digital radiography does not require film processing and allows immediate examination of X-rays on a computer screen. These images can be manipulated to allow subtle changes to be better highlighted and sent in digital form via disc or email to referring vets and clients.
Radiographs do require the patient to remain completely still to work correctly, necessitating sedation and sometimes full anesthesia in many cases. The duration of sedation or anesthesia is usually short and patient recovery is swift. A board-certified anesthesiologist oversees all procedures, and our doctors and technicians are skilled in correct restraint and positioning, so the procedure can be completed as efficiently as possible.
